An Importer -Exporter Code (IEC) is a key business identification number which mandatory for export from India or Import to India. No export or import shall be made by any person without obtaining an IEC unless specifically exempted. For services exports however, IEC shall be not be necessary except when the service provider is taking benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy.
Consequent upon introduction of GST, IEC being issued is the same as the PAN of the firm. However, the IEC will still be separately issued by DGFT based on an application.
What is Import Export Code (IEC)?
IEC is a 10-digit unique identification number issued by the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
It is mandatory for any business or individual involved in importing or exporting goods and services from India.
It is valid for a lifetime—no renewal is required.
Pre-requisites for Applying for IEC?
Legal Business entity : IEC may be applied on behalf of a firm which may be a Proprietorship, Partnership, LLP, Limited Company, Trust, HUF, Society.
Firm must have a PAN, bank account in the name of the firm and a valid address proof before applying.
PAN Mandatory for all applicants—individuals, firms, and companies.
The IEC is issued based on PAN (one PAN = one IEC).
Accepted address proof documents include ; Electricity bill or landline bill (not older than 3 months), Rent agreement or lease deed, Sale deed (for owned premises), Aadhaar or Voter ID (in case of individual applicants).
Address may be physically verified by the DGFT on issuance of the IEC.

How to Get an Import Export Code (IEC)?
Step-by-Step Process:
Visit the DGFT Website
Go to: https://www.dgft.gov.in
Register on the DGFT Portal
Create a login using your PAN and basic details.
Fill the Application Form (ANF 2A)
Submit details like business name, address, bank details, etc.
Upload Required Documents:
PAN card of the entity/individual
Address proof (electricity bill, rent agreement, etc.)
Bank certificate or a cancelled cheque
Passport-sized photo (for individuals)
Pay the Government Fee
A nominal fee (usually ₹500) is charged.
Verification and Issuance
Upon successful submission, IEC is usually issued within 1–2 working days.
